Rochdale Nine (Manchester)

Wide locks These can be hard work, much better to find another boat to share the work with. Each lock seems to have its own eccentricity. If there's a lot of water coming over the gates the flow might be too strong to open some gates - be prepared to open paddles at both ends of locks to get rid of some excess water June 06 (CA)

The Rochdale locks are heavy, with water pouring over the top of the gates as there are no sluices down the side. A number of the gates have no balance beams and you use a windlass to open and close them. September 06 (CH)
