Pubs & Restaurants

Location What's there Comments Date
Hanley Coachmaker's Arms, Lichfield Street (city centre side of ring road) Excellent traditional pub, 10 minutes walk from Etruria Junction. Even closer from Hanley Park. February 2007 (CA)
Denford, Bridge 38 Holly Bush  Decent pub, decent beer. Huge beer garden with animal zoo. Food is reasonable. The pub has just been taken over by the BW / Scottish Courage alliance and so the character may change. Pub is also easily accessible from Leek Arm. July 2006 (CA)
Cheddleton, Bridge 44 Boat Inn We had one of the best value meals we've ever had on the waterways. That's not to say it was the best quality but was more the combination of decent quality and a very good price. April 2006 (MB)
Consall Forge, Bridge 49

Black Lion The food is expensive - there's loads of "don't do this - don't do that notices" - the barman was considered grumpy by some, but we mostly liked the place - the location is stunning - train spotters need to go on a summer Sunday when the Churnet Valley Railway is running past the pub's front door. July 2006 (CA)
Only one barman, one customer and no food - but it was a winter weekday lunchtime. November 2006 (CH)
Froghall, Bridge 54 Tea rooms at Froghall Railway Station We had a pleasant light lunch. April 2006 (MB)
Shopping & Facilities
Hanley All the usual city centre shops 10 minutes walk from Etruria Junction; even closer from Hanley Park. February 2007 (CA)
Milton, Bridge 18

Butchers, supermarket, shops Go up the steps at Bridge 18 ignoring the sign about Off Licence and turn right instead. After a few hundred yards there is a butchers shop on the right selling home made pies that proved very nice. A couple of hundred yards further and you reach the centre of the village where there is a small supermarket and other shops. April 2006 (MB)
Interesting bookshop near Kwiksave. July 2006 (CA)
Good butchers / bakers but Kwik Save very limited. November 2006 (CH)
Co-op is much better than the Kwik Save. November 2006 (CH)
Endon, Bridge 28 (canalside) Fine Feathers farm shop Rather quirky organic shop / tea rooms / bird sales mainly shut down for the winter (but they do sell 'loo blue' and diesel. November 2006 (CH)
Endon, Bridge 28   Spar shop is 400 yds down the road towards Endon, reasonable stock. November 2006 (CH)
Good & Bad Moorings
Etruria Junction   Pleasant moorings by Industrial Museum; Hanley city centre is a 10 minute walk. February 2007 (CA)
Navigation Notes
Froghall Tunnel Restricted headroom Other Ownerships boats with the same hull as Rodbaston have passed through, but unless the cratch is dismantled I don't believe that Rodbaston will fit (unless there's some serious ballast at the front) July 2006 (CA)
